PROJECT TITLE
FOOD FROM THE FORESTS OF JHARKHAND
BRIEF
Jharkhand is a state of forests. The tribals of Jharkhand have been dependent on the forests since time immemorial. There are a lot of parts about forests which are unexplored till date. But the tribals of Jharkhand are far ahead of a huge part of the population of the country in this respect. There are a lot of trees in the forests whose leaves, roots, stem, flowers, fruits are edible, different types of edible mushrooms are also eaten here. This project covers some of these dishes, how they are prepared in Jharkhand and their benefit.
Hoping this could reach out as a source of goodwill to humanity and also give out a new image of Jharkhand.
WHY DID I DO THIS PROJECT?
I have always felt like Jharkhand has been a neglected state across the country. The recognition we get is also associated with Bihar a lot many times. it’s cuisine, it’s traditions did not reach the masses. It always intrigued me. I always wanted people to know how my state is. Jharkhand has a plethora of native dishes, prepared from natural ingredients which are not only tasty but also very beneficial to health and I felt like they deserved a platform for being known to people.
RESEARCH
I started my research with how Jharkhand was formed, what was so different about the culture that led to the separation of it from bihar, I also researched about the tribal communities living in Jharkhand, what they do for a livelihood, what their day looks like, what do they eat, how close are they to the nature. For that purpose, I went to 2-3 nearby villages and spoke to the people there.
JHARKHAND AT A GLANCE
Jharkhand, one of India’s newest states, was carved out of the southern portion of Bihar in 2000. Jharkhand is located in the northeastern part of the country. Jharkhand is bordered by the states of Bihar to the north, West Bengal to the east, Odisha to the south, Chhattisgarh to the west, and Uttar Pradesh to the northwest. Its capital is Ranchi.
More than one-fourth of Jharkhand’s land area is forested. Most forests occur on the Chota Nagpur plateau.

They were very friendly, and apart from providing these information, they also took me to the nearby forest and showed the trees, plants, fruits flowers which they eat.
FINDINGS
-
The local people of Jharkhand are so close to forest that by a glance they can tell that if the plant is poisonous or not and most of the time their estimates are correct.
-
There are proven health benefits of these plants so it also some times happen that they live in tribal areas which are not very well connected to the cities they cure minor health ailments like cough, cold, joint pains using these plants and they are convinced that they cure their ailments.
